Edit
You've hired a web designer. Now what. What kind of build process can you, should you expect? We can't speak for anybody else. But here's our own 10-step web development process, as an example. The rigorous protocol starts with a "discovery" phase. Does your new agency have this, or something like it?
They better. Because, time is money - your money. And lots of your money will be wasted unless there's a rigorous development process in place. If I were to diagram it, it would look exactly like a funnel. The top, widest part of the funnel is all about information gathering. At the bottom of the site comes the easy part: launch.
We have a whole page which spells out the process step-by-step, so I'll refer you to that for more detailed information. Here's a quick rundown. There are 10 steps.
Discovery
Maybe the most important phase, in which we get to know you, establish rapport and map out the project.
Imagery
Web design being an increasingly visual art, we need to think about illustration right out of the gate.
Copy
Text content for the site will have to come from us or you.
Architecture
How will we organize all our content so that it's easy for users find their way around?
Prototype
We create a prototype homepage; and then, a prototype inside page.
Buildout
The approved prototype becomes the basis for all our other pages.
Launch
In some ways the easiest part of the whole thing.
Tune
All pages are tested to make sure they look good and work well across the entire range of viewing screens - desktop monitors down to the smallest smartphones.
Launch SEO
All the get-found features baked into the site are turned on and called to the attention of the search engines.
Maintain
A long-range program of continuous improvement and monitoring is established.
